The Harrisburg City Islanders have some of the most passionate supporters throughout the United Soccer League!
As we wind down from the 2017 season and prepare for next year, we want to thank each and every one of you who supported this team and made the season a special one, both at home and on the road.
From the first 2017 ticket sale to our final match on October 7 in Charleston, South Carolina our fans, our sponsors, and our partners were all forces that gave our City Islanders team the momentum to push through their 14th season.
Let’s look back at some key moments from 2017 that highlighted the season:
New Ownership, New Outfitter: We kicked off the year with major club news: there is a new majority owner of the organization – George Altirs. This announcement accumulated over 2,000 views on Facebook and brought several assets to the organization including a new outfitter for the Islanders, Capelli Sport. All season, the players donned their stylish Capelli Sport kits, while fans and front office staff sported an assortment of Capelli gear to represent Central PA’s soccer club.
The Return to FNB Field: This year, our club hosted all 16 home matches where the action started — on City Island in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Betwixt the East and West shores, we were able to entertain our most dedicated supporters along with some new faces from both sides of the water, in the heart of the capital city.
Capital City Crew: 2017 marked the inception of the Capital City Crew, the Official Supporters Group of the Harrisburg City Islanders. With their mission to promote club, community, and culture, this squad played an integral role in keeping soccer alive throughout the city of Harrisburg. They cheered us on at every home match, followed us on the road, hosted viewing parties, and awarded Ropapa Mensah and Brandon Miller with Players of the Year certificates. Their support was tremendous!
Capital Cup Tournament: For the first time, the Harrisburg City Islanders Youth Academy hosted the Capital Cup Tournament. Over Father’s Day weekend, our Academy and members of the pro team banded together to carryout a successful event that youth players up and down the east coast would remember.
Community Outreach: We continued our community outreach efforts throughout the 2017 season through renewed partnerships and new ones alike.
From our #Goals4Diamonds campaign with the Four Diamonds Foundation to our various jersey auctions that raised nearly $5,000 for Feel Your Boobies, the Four Diamonds Foundation, and Wounded Warriors Project, our team was constantly engaging with the community and finding new ways to get the community involved in what we were doing.
“Of the weeks”: What about the action on the field?! Various City Islanders players were selected for the USL’s “Of-the-Week” recognition throughout the season for their outstanding effort and remarkable plays.
Jamie Thomas ignited the fire when he made Team of the Week in April after a strong defensive game against the New Red Bulls II. Manolo Sanchez, Cardel Benbow, Pedro Ribeiro, Brandon Miller, Mohoummed Dabo, and Ropapa Mensah all followed suit in earning a position in future line-ups. Mensah’s Goal of the Week, Miller and Lewis’s back-to-back Saves of the Week, and Abass Mohammed’s Ghanaian National Team call-up helped poise the Islanders as strong contenders in the final stretch of the 2017 season.
At every turn of the season, our supporters were there to witness some of our greatest victories and some of our toughest challenges. Although our team didn’t reach the playoffs, the year was full of excitement and some of the strongest support we’ve experienced as a club.
Entering 2018, our goal is to make the experience even better for our most valuable player: YOU!
The Harrisburg City Islanders organization, from the ownership to the team to the technical and front office staff, values the unwavering dedication of our fans and supporters to the club. In this off-season, we will work diligently to present such a devoted group with new initiatives and an even stronger presence in the Central Pennsylvania region, knowing that you all will stand by our efforts and get involved in the action.
We can’t wait to see you back next year!
