The USL PRO is currently in the process of a major expansion, three new teams have been added to compete in the 2014 season. The new additions include the Oklahoma City Energy, Sacramento Republic, and Los Angeles Galaxy II. All three newly added teams will have an affiliate team in the MLS. The Oklahoma City Energy will be the affiliate of Sporting Kansas City, while Sacramento will team up with the San Jose Earthquakes. The LA Galaxy will experiment with a unique system similar to European professional structure with a first team squad competing in the MLS and the Galaxy II playing in the USL PRO. The Los Angeles Galaxy is the first team owned and operated by Major League Soccer. The Islanders will host the Galaxy II for the first time on July 30 at Skyline Sports Complex.
With the new team additions, the USL PRO and MLS continue to strengthen their partnership. A partnership, that began five years ago when the Harrisburg City Islanders and Philadelphia Union became affiliate teams.
