Forward Aaron Wheeler Returns to the Harrisburg City Islanders

The Baltimore Native to Play a Second Season for the Central PA Team

Harrisburg, PA (February 16, 2017) – The Harrisburg City Islanders have opted to retain forward Aaron Wheeler for 2017. Wheeler joined the club in 2016 after completing his 2015 campaign with the Wilmington Hammerheads, a former United Soccer League (USL) franchise.  Prior to that, Wheeler spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS).

Aaron Wheeler was an offensive powerhouse for the Harrisburg City Islanders in 2016. Despite playing in less than half of the club’s matches last season due to injury, Wheeler filled the stat sheet in 13 games. The powerful forward saw just 798 minutes of action on the pitch and still scored 5 goals, had 1 assist, and brought in 14 points for Harrisburg.  Overall, Wheeler ranked third on the team in goals and fourth in points.

Head Coach Bill Becher praised Wheeler’s incredible performance in 2016 and knows how crucial the forward is to the club’s success in 2017.

“Aaron was a big part of our success early [last season]. Unfortunately, he was injured midway through the season,” stated Becher. “Losing him kept us from making the playoffs. If he stays healthy this year, I think we will certainly be a playoff team. We expect big things from Aaron this coming season.”

Aaron Wheeler also had an impact on his teammates. Returning Harrisburg midfielder Paul Wilson commented on Aaron’s strong leadership and his role on the Harrisburg City Islanders team.  According to Wilson, “He’s [Wheeler] a really good guy. He is experienced and a strong leader. Having him back on the team is a real plus for us.”

Wheeler is expecting a strong season with Harrisburg in 2017.

“First and foremost, I am looking forward to a healthy, full season. I am looking forward to being back around the guys, playing at FNB Field for the whole year, and bringing that City Islanders culture back to the area,” he stated. “My favorite part about the team is the group of guys that come in.  They have the right attitude, they are fun, and everyone is dedicated to what we’re trying to do as an organization.”

Aaron Wheeler is the second forward to join the Harrisburg City Islanders’ 2017 roster.
