Harrisburg, PA (March 23, 2017) – The Harrisburg City Islanders are set to kick off their 2017 season when they travel to meet the Richmond Kickers at City Field on Saturday, March 25 (5 p.m.).
For the second year in a row, the Islanders open up their regular season campaign on the road against the Kickers. Last year, the Islanders suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Richmond side with Paul Wilson scoring the team’s lone goal.
The two teams met just one more time in 2016 and Richmond came away with another defiant 3-0 win at FNB Field.
The match-up on Saturday is the first of three meetings between the Islanders and the Kickers. Harrisburg will make their way back to Richmond on Saturday, May 13 before the Kickers come to FNB Field on Saturday, July 15.
Harrisburg has a lot of new faces this season that look to make an immediate impact in the season opener. Players like Lee Nishanian and Brandon Miller have a wealth of experience playing on championship caliber teams and they are ready to bring that leadership to this Islanders team.
Miller was one of the big acquisitions for the Islanders in the 2017 off-season. In 2015, he was named the USL Goalie of the Year when he led his Rochester Rhinos to the USL Championship Cup. In that season, Miller surrendered only 11 goals on his way to posting a record-breaking 13 shutouts.
The Islanders have brought back a host of players from the 2016 season as well to round out their side with some familiar faces. Veteran players like Wilson, Aaron Wheeler, and Cardel Benbow will be players to watch as they start their seasons.
Wheeler was on pace for a terrific season in 2016 before suffering an injury half-way through the season. Still, he finished third on the team in goals (5) and fourth in points (11). Wilson had four goals and five assists on the season last year to finish third on the team in points.
After the game in Richmond, the Islanders will stay on the road to face the New York Red Bulls II on April 5, before returning home for their first match at FNB Field in 2017.
The City Islanders open up their defense of City Island on Saturday, April 15 at 7 p.m. against their in-state rivals the Bethlehem Steel FC. Last season Harrisburg went undefeated against their newest foe from the Keystone State and posted a 1-1 draw against them in the 2017 preseason.
