The Harrisburg City Islanders defeat Saint Louis FC 2-0 with a stout offensive attack.
The Harrisburg City Islanders came out of the gate in a must win situation against Saint Louis FC with one thing in mind, Attack on Offense. Manolo Sanchez was the unquestioned leader of the offensive attack early as he tested Saint Louis keeper Devala Gorrick with a fury of shots early on until he finally broke through in the 5′ minute off a corner kick with the set piece coming from recent Ghanian National Team call-up Abass Mohammed.
“I worked hard for this moment” said Manolo Sanchez when asked about his strong offensive performance in the game. “The team has really worked hard in the past five or six games and it was great for them.”
The City Islanders controlled both sides of the ball in the first half limiting Saint Louis to just one shot in the first half of play, while putting 9 shots of their own testing the Saint Louis defense throughout the first half.
The second half began very similarly to the first with the City Islanders pushing on offense, but Saint Louis responded with some offensive pressure of their own as they more than doubled their first half shot total just a few minutes after the second half whistle. Play was back and forth with several dangerous moments for both squads.
Ropapa Mensah netted his fourth goal in the last 3 games as he struck a low stinging shot into the left corner beating Garrick off a stellar assist for Jonny Mendoza. This allowed the City Islanders to cruise to victory with a comfortable 2-0 lead the rest of the way.
The 2-0 victory lifts the City Islanders to 10-14-7 on the season and mark the club’s third win in as many games. The City Islanders will conclude their 2017 season next Saturday as they match up against the Charleston Battery at MUSC Health Stadium in Charleston. Kick-off is set for 7:00pm.
