Cardel Benbow Re-Signs with Harrisburg Before Heading to Jamaica
The Jamaican Midfielder Suits Up for Portmore United FC Prior to Harrisburg’s Training Camp
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Harrisburg, PA (January 23, 2017) – The Harrisburg City Islanders have re-signed midfielder Cardel Benbow to a 2-year deal, setting up the Jamaican talent to return to the pitch in 2017. Additionally, the previous Portmore United FC team member will travel to his hometown and represent their national team. The Jamaican midfielder has been cleared to play and will return to Harrisburg prior to the Islanders’ training camp. Returning midfielder Paul Wilson also suited up for Portmore United FC prior to joining the Harrisburg City Islanders last season.
Benbow played in 25 of Harrisburg’s 30 contests in 2016 and filled the stat sheet with some impressive numbers in his 1,524 minutes of playing time. In total, he collected 6 points on 2 goals and 2 assists, with 28 shots including 9 shots on goal. Benbow tallied the sixth best total in shots (28) and in shots on goal (9) on the Harrisburg squad last season. He tied for third on the team in assists (2) alongside Jamie Thomas and Shawn McLaws.
Benbow looks forward to returning to the field with the Harrisburg City Islanders, but also relishes the opportunity to tune up his game on his home soil prior to the start of the 2017 campaign.
“It’s a privilege to be back in Harrisburg for my third year. Thank God!” exclaimed Benbow. “I’m looking forward to the 2017 season to be back with the players and the Harrisburg City Islanders coaching staff. They have always believed in me and have pushed me to the best of my ability, so I’m really looking forward to this season. I have been working hard, and the best is yet to come.”
“Its a joy and a pleasure to come back to Jamaica and represent my former club. I’m also using this as a stepping stone in preparing for my 2017 season with Harrisburg,” explained Benbow. “It’s a good feeling to have the privilege to come back home in front of my hometown to play. The Portmore United players show me a lot of love and respect and it brings back a lot of great memories.”
Harrisburg’s Head Coach Bill Becher commented on Benbow’s 2016 performance and his return in 2017.
“Cardel got off to a little bit of a slow start (in 2016) but by midseason he started to find his form; he was as dangerous as anybody in the league in the second half of the season,” said Becher. “We think Cardel could be a big goal scorer in this league.”
Additionally, Becher has high hopes for Cardel’s impending trip overseas.
“An opportunity came up for Cardel to play with Portmore in Jamaica and we think it’s a good way for him to get some game fitness in before he gets here in the preseason. We hope all goes well there and look forward to seeing him at the start of our training camp.”
Cardel Benbow is the fourth player to officially join the Harrisburg City Islanders’ 2017 roster.
The current Harrisburg City Islanders 2017 roster is as follows:
Paul Wilson (Midfield)
Mouhamed Dabo (Midfield)
Danny DiPrima (Midfield)
Cardel Benbow (Midfield)
