Harrisburg City Islanders Face Bethlehem Steel to Kick Off Play on the Island
Harrisburg, PA (April 10, 2017) – After opening up the 2017 season with two matches on the road, the Harrisburg City Islanders are set to open their defense of FNB Field with the first match against Bethlehem Steel FC on Saturday, April 15 at 7 p.m.
In their last outing, the City Islanders pulled an upset on the road against the defending USL Champs, the New York Red Bulls II. Manolo Sanchez chipped a ball right by the Red Bulls II goalie in the second half and Brandon Miller kept a clean sheet despite facing a barrage of shots late in the match.
Bethlehem is also 1-1-0 on the season after a 2-0 win against Cincinnati FC in their last game. The Steel opened up their season at home with a 3-2 loss to the Rochester Rhinos.
This is the first of three meetings between the Pennsylvania teams. Harrisburg is set to host one more matchup on June 20, while the Islanders will travel to Goodwin Stadium on May 28.
Harrisburg has earned three points with one win in their first two games. They had chances to grab points out of each game but an errant penalty kick from Aaron Wheeler in Richmond was the difference in the first 1-0 loss of the season.
Harrisburg only had six total shots against the Red Bulls and Sanchez’s lone goal was the only shot on net during the game for the Islanders. The Islanders will need more pressure on the net to keep up with the high-scoring Steel, who have four goals in their first two games.
The Islanders have played solid defense in their first two games and will need to continue on Saturday to come out with three points. Bethlehem’s Seku Conneh has three goals in two games and is coming off a two-goal performance in their last match against FC Cincinnati.
Last season, Harrisburg went undefeated (2-0-1) against their new in-state rivals from less than 100 miles away.
Harrisburg took control in the new rivalry with an early 3-0 drubbing of the Steel and backed that up with a close 1-0 road win at Goodman Stadium. The two teams played to a two-all draw in the final match-up of the season in their only match of the season at FNB Field in 2016.
Come out to FNB Field for the City Islanders’ home opener to help the team #RockTheIsland for the start of the 2017 season. The first 1,000 fans into the stadium receive an exclusive free rally towel courtesy of Capital BlueCross. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and discounted tickets can be purchased by April 14 at 5 p.m.
